Guccio Gucci lahir pada tahun 1881. Ayah Guccio adalah seorang pengrajin kulit. Tak heran jika bakat itu kemudian menurun ke Guccio. Awalnya Guccio hanya membuat tas untuk para penunggang kuda pada tahun 1920-an, namun kemudian berlanjut ke koper mewah. Usahanya semakin maju. Lalu pada tahun 1906 ia mendirikan House of Gucci yaitu toko perlengkapan pelana di Florence. Dan selanjutnya pada tahun 1938 Guccio membuka toko ritel pertamanya di Condotti Via di Roma.

Ikon Gucci sendiri pertama dikenal pada tahun 1947 saat sebuah tas kulit dengan pegangan bambu dibuat. Selama tahun 1950-an merek tas dengan anyaman bergaris-garis merah dan pegangan bambu itupun mulai dikenal sebagai merek Gucci. Pada tahun ini pula Guccio Gucci menciptakan karya klasik lainnya seperti: koper, dasi, sepatu, dan tas olahraga.

Tahun 1953 Guccio Gucci meninggal. Perusahaan di teruskan oleh keluarganya dan mengalami perkembangan yang cukup pesat yakni dengan dibukannya toko di Paris, Beverly Hills, London, Palm Beach, dan Tokyo. Tahun 1960,Gucci mengalami masa keemasan, sejak beberapa bintang Hollywood seperti Grace Kelly, Peter Seller, dan Audrey Hepburn membuat nama Gucci indentik dengan “chic”. Lalu lahirlah logo “GG” yang adalah singkatan dari Guccio Gucci.
