Bagaimana sebenarnya asal mula tas ini terlahir? Birkin pada awalnya merupakan tas yang diciptakan berdasarkan inspirasi dari seorang aktris, penyanyi, sekaligus ikon fashion kelahiran Inggris yang tinggal di Perancis bernama Jane Mallory Birkin, atau dikenal Jane Birkin. Aktris jelita yang kini berusia 64 tahun itu dahulu juga dikenal sebagai muse dari seniman musik, aktor, sekaligus sutradara terkenal asal Perancis, Serge Gainsbourg. Birkin terkenal di Indonesia awal 1970-an lewat lagu ”J’Taime”, di mana ia hanya mengeluarkan rintihan.

Alkisah, pada awal tahun 1980-an, CEO Hermes Jean-Louis Dumas duduk berdekatan dengan Jane Birkin di pesawat dalam perjalanan antara Paris dan London. Ketika itu, Birkin tanpa sengaja menjatuhkan tas tangannya serta menumpahkan isinya. Birkin lalu mengeluh kesulitan menemukan tas tangan yang cocok dan nyaman untuknya. Dari peristiwa itulah, tahun 1984 Hermes kemudian menciptakan sebuah tas yang lantas mengambil nama sang aktris, Birkin. Jane Birkin sendiri membenarkan asal mula tas itu dalam sebuah wawancara dengan majalah Elle pada Maret 2010.

 Meski telah lama tercipta, sejatinya para selebriti Hollywood-lah yang menjadi pembakar kegilaan perempuan akan Birkin. Salah satunya Victoria Beckham, yang amat fanatik mengoleksi Birkin.
